As usual, I had no idea where I was going when I started drawing this. At about the midpoint, I thought it might be funny to make a satire of “Faces of Death” and have the fruit sliced up and “dead.” But that seemed too morbid for me. Sure, it’s an amusing reference and I bet the images would have been fun to draw, but the reference itself is just wrong.
Full disclosure: a friend and I rented one of those VHS tapes when we were kids. Imagine being a kid and renting such a thing! I watched it and it creeped me out. Some of the features were obvious fakes and I thought the makeup and such were interesting, but the real stuff gave me a sinking feeling in my gut. Some of the images still haunt me to this day. I do not recommend watching them. And, for that reason, I didn’t go with that gag.
