This one is near and dear to my heart. My Mom passed away last year from cancer and I was heartbroken. She and I were close. She encouraged me with my art and never judged me for not having huge success with it. Additionally, she didn’t tell me to quit so that I could “get a real job” (probably because I always had a full-time job). I miss her so much.
Granted, this comic is not autobiographical, and I am not calling my dear Mom a cow. Absolutely not! But I didn’t know what I would be creating when I started the comic. I wrote “A Mother’s Love” on the top and my first thought was to draw a cow giving birth. What followed was the first thing that came to mind – probably because of my experiences. “You write what you know,” as they say.
Being an artist is not easy in a society that deems financial gain as its main indicator of success. The term “starving artist” didn’t come from nowhere. That said, it’s a labor of love and, in the end, the work itself is its own reward. Seeing people enjoy it is a blessing.
